Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has signed an agreement worth 93 billion won (approximately US$64 million) with the Philippine Department of National Defense to modernize the Philippine Air Force’s FA-50 fighter fleet.

Under the contract, 11 FA-50PH aircraft will undergo upgrades through 2029, focusing on increased capability to employ precision-guided munitions, as well as improvements in range and endurance. The package also includes enhanced network-based interoperability, expanding the ability to conduct joint military operations more effectively.

Between 2015 and 2017, the Philippine Air Force received 12 FA-50PH jets; one was later lost in a training accident, reducing the operational fleet.

The FA-50PH is a light attack aircraft that shares the same platform as the T-50 advanced trainer and can assume combat roles when fitted with appropriate weapons—a feature that provides the type with significant operational flexibility.

In June, Manila further advanced the expansion of its air capabilities by ordering an additional 12 FA-50PH units in a deal estimated at US$700 million, reinforcing its partnership with South Korea’s aerospace industry and the ongoing modernization of its combat aviation.
